The bulk of Macmillan Education’s Middle Eastern activities revolves around the regional publishing list, an ongoing (mostly ELT) programme based in the UK and supported by a dynamic local office in Cairo. Macmillan Education started publishing in the Middle East in 1988 with an ESP series (English for Agriculture, which is still in print and very successful) as well as a Science series for Egyptian state experimental schools. The division quickly moved on to focus on the private school sector, leading to the development of a strong primary ELT list for private schools which has put Macmillan Education in the leading position in that sector in the region as a whole. Notable successes have included Rainbow 2000, Surprise, New Adventures and particularly Way Ahead, a mini-blockbuster in its own right. Secondary English courses were also developed in Jordan and Bahrain, in 1994 and 1996 respectively.

Bahrain

Macmillan Education has been supplying the Bahrain Ministry of Education a specially adapted version of the New Adventures course (New Adventures for Bahrain) since 1996.

Dubai

An office recently opened in Dubai Media in 2002 to strengthen the company's presence in the Gulf area.

Egypt

Macmillan Education’s office in Cairo was set up in 1986 and has grown steadily since that time, both in strength and in number. With the help of a strong network of local distributors and high quality product designed to meet local needs, it has placed Macmillan firmly in the leading position in the private school market.

In the meantime tailored publishing for the Ministry of Education has continued: a new revised edition of the English for Agriculture series was published in 2001/02 with the addition of an English/Arabic Agriculture Dictionary in 2002.

Jordan

The office in Amman was set up in 1995. As well as promoting Macmillan product in the private schools and universities, it offers much-needed teacher support and training throughout the year.

Lebanon

The office in Beirut was set up in 1997. Macmillan Education books are distributed through a network of sub-distributors throughout the country.

Morocco

The Marrakesh office was set up in 1998.

The Palestinian Authority

In 2000 Macmillan Education signed a contract with the Palestine National Authority to develop and supply an entirely new English course for its state schools (English for Palestine) following a period of consultations with curriculum advisors and academics nominated by the Authority.

Saudi Arabia
Macmillan Education has recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education in Saudi to develop and publish English for Saudi Arabia, a new course introducing English from primary level.
