About us: Macmillan Education in Asia

Hong Kong and China

Following Macmillan’s decision to open offices in East Asia, Macmillan Hong Kong was registered in July 1969 and began operating in 1970. It started off publishing textbooks in English for the secondary school market and was made up of a group of local partners influential in the local book trade and publishing sector. Macmillan still held the majority share. A few years later, a print-buying unit was set up in Hong Kong and registered under the name Peninsula Publishers (China) Ltd.

In the mid-eighties, Macmillan bought all the shares of the local partners of Macmillan Hong Kong and combined the two companies into one. Macmillan Publishers (China) Ltd came into being with the long-term view that the Hong Kong company would be used as the springboard to develop the large and growing market place in China.

Publishing operations in China are run on a joint venture basis with local Chinese publishing houses. Macmillan tends to provide authors and editorial services for joint ventures, whilst the local Chinese companies handle Education Ministry matters and sales and distribution.

These are exciting times for the development of Macmillan's publishing interests in China with excellent progress being made in Beijing and Shanghai to name but two major cities.

Within Macmillan Publishers (China), there has been a Macmillan East Asia office in Hong Kong since September 1997, focusing both on the selling ELT titles into the growing Education market in the East Asia and on promoting the Palgrave Macmillan academic list across the region. In 2002 Pan Macmillan also set up a representation office within the Macmillan Publishers (China) office.
