Africa for nearly 40 years. It has established a reputation for
producing quality educational textbooks and supplementary Macmillan is a leading publisher in the tropical health sector, developing texts that are widely respected and used throughout the world. The companys unrivalled standing in Africa is built upon a close understanding of the specific requirements of each of the countries in which it operates. Another key to its success is its ability to publish titles written by experienced authors to curriculum requirements. Macmillan Education is currently active in ELT publishing in Ethiopia, Rwanda and most recently Angola. In addition, Macmillan Education has distribution operations in Mauritius and the Seychelles. Gamsberg Publishers was founded in September 1977 by Herman van Wyk and Hans Viljoen, as a publishing house and bookseller. Macmillans relationship with Gamsberg began in 1989, when the companys name was changed to Gamsberg Macmillan Publishers. Hans Viljoen retired soon after this. Subsidiaries include:
At present, 72 members of staff are employed. Gamsberg Macmillan and Out of Africa have, in total, about 1200 titles on their lists: 90% school textbooks and 10% fiction and non-fiction titles. The company supplies 95% of indigenous language textbooks and 48% of ELT school textbooks in Namibia. Gamsberg Macmillan distributes textbooks directly to some 1800 schools, some of which are up to 1300 km from headquarters in Windhoek. The companys 15 delivery vehicles are mostly 4x4 diesel LDVs which sometimes have to negotiate very difficult terrain. Books are published in 15 languages: English, Afrikaans, German, French, Portuguese, and 10 African Languages. Gamsberg Macmillan deems this a world first for the most languages published under one roof. South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique Macmillan Boleswa is the group holding company and was registered in 1978 in Swaziland. BOLESWA is an acronym of Botswana (BO), Lesotho (LES) and Swaziland (SWA). Nearly 25 years later, Swaziland still acts as the regional distribution centre for southern Africa. Today, there is also a warehouse in Gaborone which handles orders for Botswana. Sales staff operate in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and 8 of the 9 provinces in South Africa. There are publishing operations in Botswana, Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa. The production services, accounting and administration departments are all based in Johannesburg. Each year the group publishes between 250 and 300 new titles (595 in 2002/2003) and in 2002 it distributed approximately 8 million books. Over 120 members of staff are employed across all 5 countries. Macmillan Boleswa has recently acquired a competing South African publisher called Clever Books. While all support services have been fully integrated into the Boleswa group, publishing remains autonomous from a separate office in Pretoria. Clever Books employs 18 people. The College Press was established in 1967 to provide textbooks for the schools market. Macmillan acquired it in a joint venture with Zimbabwean shareholders soon after Zimbabwe became independent in 1981. Today this Macmillan company is the largest Zimbabwean educational publisher with a staff of 60. All of the company's titles are commissioned, edited, designed, produced and distributed locally. The company publishes primary and secondary school textbooks, general books, novels and readers. On average, College Press publishes 60 titles per year. It has a huge backlist. The company also represents Macmillan Education and a number of other publishers and produces local editions under licence. |
