The Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners has been announced WINNER of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh English-Speaking Union English Language Book Award in 2002.

The Duke of Edinburgh English-Speaking Union Award is presented annually to the best and most innovative work in the field of teaching or learning the English language. This prominent award for the most innovative work of the year on the English Language whether presenting a description, a teaching methodology or a work devoted to language in use for a specific purpose of profession, is applicable to books published between 1st July 2001 and 30th June 2002.

The Macmillan English Dictionary is the first dictionary to have received this award in a long time. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT, President of the ESU and Chairman of the English Language Council, will present the award at Buckingham Palace later this year.

Launch of MED Magazine
October 2002

An exciting new Macmillandictionary.com email service has been launched: the MED Magazine. MED Magazine, the free monthly webzine of the Macmillan English Dictionary resource site, will cover a wide range of topics, all connected to the English language and the teaching of English as a foreign language. VS Naipaul launches the Macmillan English Dictionary

The distinguished gathering of the great and good ensured a pleasant birth, and media coverage in the next day’s newspapers and on TV.

Despite the predictable rainy weather, MED was blessed and launched at Samuel Johnson’s house in central London by both a resuscitated Samuel Johnson, father of the English dictionary, and rain-soaked VS Naipaul, the Nobel Prize winner for English Literature.

 

Uncovering Grammar has won the 2002 Ben Warren International House Prize

The BEN WARREN - INTERNATIONAL HOUSE TRUST PRIZE, launched in September 1996, is a new annual book prize of 2,000 pounds sterling to be awarded each year to the author or authors of the most outstanding work in the field of language teacher education.

The prize is awarded by the Ben Warren - International House Trust, set up as a memorial to the life and work of Ben Warren, who was tragically killed while attending the International House Directors' Conference in May 1991. He was the founder of the IH schools in Eastern Spain and one of the key figures in the growth and development of the International House organisation. The Trust has been funded by contributions from his friends, colleagues and admirers around the world.

Macmillan English Dictionary Launch Bangkok
Tuesday January 22nd

Tuesday January 22nd saw the first official launch of the Macmillan English Dictionary take place in Bangkok. To mark the launch of the new English dictionary teachers and booksellers were invited to enjoy High Tea at the Siam City Hotel. Sixty teachers and university lectures, including members of the Thailand TESOL executive committee, came to the launch as well as over twenty booksellers.
